Claus Sørensen’s focus on innovation and sustainability is perfectly aligned with Lineage’s strategy

Claus Sørensen adds to Lineage’s value-added services portfolio in Denmark, with additional packing, customs and border control and distribution

Novi, MI and Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Lineage Logistics, LLC (“Lineage” or the “Company”), a leading global temperature-controlled industrial REIT and logistics solutions provider, today announced it has closed the acquisition of the cold storage division of Claus Sørensen Group, a renowned cold storage operator in Denmark.

The acquisition was first announced on 15 June 2021.

The expansion in Denmark is a key element of Lineage’s growth plans in the Nordic region. Through the acquisition, Lineage’s global reach brings important connectivity to Denmark, which is developing as a leading European hub in the global cold-storage supply chain with world-class air freight and maritime shipping infrastructure.

Amplifying the Company’s existing presence in Denmark, Lineage’s acquisition of Claus Sørensen will add significant volumes in strategic locations near Danish ports and food production centres.

Claus Sørensen, headquartered in Esbjerg, has a capacity of almost one million cubic metres and 200,000 pallet positions across nine warehouses and more than 250 team members. With the acquisition and completion of ongoing construction in the region, Lineage’s total footprint in Denmark will include 17 locations and nearly 300,000 pallet positions.

Claus Sørensen provides cold storage for meat and poultry, bread, ice cream, pre-cooked meals, fruits and vegetables, and dairy. In addition to warehousing, it provides blast freezing, quality control, order picking and packing, ice production, customs, and distribution for retail and catering. Claus Sørensen can freeze 1,800 tonnes of products per day. As an important link in the Danish food and beverage supply chain, Claus Sørensen has partnered with its customers in order to enhance their supply chain operations, achieve maximum energy efficiency and protect the environment.

“Lineage’s dedication to both innovation and service parallels with our longstanding commitment to being a preferred partner for our customers,” said Jesper Toft Mathiasen, CEO at Claus Sørensen. “We are excited to join a company that shares our values and to join forces with Lineage’s team in the region to transform our customers’ supply chain and to help them grow their businesses.”

Lineage Logistics entered the Nordic market in 2020. Since then, the company has acquired Lundsøe Køl & Frys A/S with cold-storage facilities in Northern Jutland and in Aarhus, Super Frost Sjælland ApS, and Coldstar ApS, in addition to the acquisition of Claus Sørensen.

Lineage Logistics Unveils Fully Automated Facility in Portsmouth, Virginia

New, state-of-the-art cold storage warehouse is strategically located near Port of Virginia’s world-renowned Portsmouth Marine Terminal and will support the nation’s supply chain needs

Facility represents an $84 million investment that will spur economic and job development in Portsmouth, Virginia

Portsmouth, VA – Lineage Logistics, LLC (“Lineage” or the “Company”), the world’s largest and most innovative temperature-controlled industrial REIT and logistics solutions provider, today announced the opening of its newest fully automated facility strategically located near the Port of Virginia’s world-renowned Virginia International Gateway in Portsmouth which offers an integrated network of highways, air, rail, and sea services.

The new state-of-the-art cold storage warehouse joins Lineage’s growing network of over 22 fully automated facilities worldwide. The Company’s growing automation presence comes at a critical time for the cold chain sector as the pandemic accelerated much-needed change to operations and systems within the decades-old cold storage industry. Lineage’s industry-leading automation technology increases storage density, maximizes capacity, provides real-time inventory management, and keeps food safe all while reducing energy consumption.

“As a testament to the power of public-private partnership, we are so pleased to announce the opening of our state-of-the-art facility in Portsmouth,” said Brian Beattie, Senior Vice President of Sale at Lineage Logistics. “Lineage’s innovative technology used in the Portsmouth warehouse will help our customers address rising supply chain demands both nationally and internationally while contributing to the ongoing economic development and job development in the region.”

Portsmouth Economic Development alongside the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Portsmouth Ports & Industrial Commission, and the Virginia Port Authority worked to secure the project for Lineage, which in the end resulted in the $84 million investment, produced over 80 high-paying jobs with a Portsmouth-first plan, and remediated a former chemical plant site that was previously vacant – all of which have benefited and will continue to support the city’s economic expansion.

“Portsmouth is thrilled to welcome Lineage Logistics to our business community,” said Shannon E. Glover, Mayor of Portsmouth. “Lineage has already become a wonderful community partner with its participation in our Portsmouth@Work programs, its commitment to supporting Portsmouth residents and businesses, and in the redevelopment of a key brownfield site. We look forward to Lineage continuing to grow in Portsmouth.”

The 167,264 square-foot facility, which is adjacent to the Virginia International Gateway, provides Lineage with access to key markets and will serve as a critical hub to connect people with food around the world. The facility will also aid in strengthening the supply chain and logistics infrastructure in Portsmouth as well as address the growing demand for cold storage in the region. The facility includes 26,000 pallet positions and blast freezing capabilities.

“This new cold storage facility is an important regional asset that is going to create jobs, provide greater flexibility to movers of cold cargo and help increase volumes of cold cargo moving across The Port of Virginia,” said Stephen A. Edwards, CEO and Executive Director of the Virginia Port Authority. “When we expanded and optimized Virginia International Gateway [just two years ago] we added a significant amount of capacity to handle cold cargo. Lineage’s new facility, which isn’t far from the gates at VIG, is going to help directly support our investment and make the port a destination for movers of cold cargo. We look forward to working with Lineage Logistics and helping to maximize its investment here.”

At 10:30 AM EST today, leaders from Lineage Logistics will be joined by Portsmouth community leaders and business partners, including Senator Louise Lucas, Secretary Brian Ball and Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover, to celebrate the hard work of the teams who transformed the facility from concept to reality. The event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by group tours of the facility.

Lineage Logistics completes acquisition of Kloosterboer Group

The acquisition strengthens Lineage’s ability to serve customers worldwide, including locations in France and Germany, and enhances Lineage’s value-added services offerings

Kloosterboer is a recognised sustainability leader, aligning with Lineage’s focus on this critical area

Uniting the companies’ innovation and warehouse automation capabilities will lead to greater supply chain efficiencies for customers

Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Lineage Logistics LLC, a leading global temperature-controlled industrial REIT and logistics solutions provider, has completed its acquisition of Kloosterboer Group, a Netherlands-based, family-owned cold storage company with a strong global footprint. The companies combine to create an enhanced facility network in key European markets with a focus on sustainability and innovation within the temperature-controlled supply chain.

Kloosterboer has 900 team members and 11 strategically located facilities in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Canada and South Africa, totalling 6.4 million cubic metres of capacity and 790,000 pallet positions, with a commercial focus on port-based activities and highly-automated warehouse solutions. Kloosterboer also provides value-added services like freight forwarding, customs brokerage, juice blending, container handling, and intermodal transport.

“We welcome the Kloosterboer team to the One Lineage family and are thrilled to unite with an organization that has a nearly 100-year history of being entrepreneurial and customer centric. We look forward to integrating their state-of-the-art facilities and diverse services so we can better serve our customers in Europe and around the world. It’s also clear that we have cultural alignment with a shared focus on leading the industry in sustainability and innovation,” said Harld Peters, Senior Vice President for Europe at Lineage.

Sustainability leadership in the sector has been a hallmark for Kloosterboer. Five facilities have been recognized by BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) and the company’s use of nearly 18,000 solar panels and four wind turbines have reduced the equivalent CO2 consumption of more than 4,100 households.

Both companies are known as leaders in developing and operating the industry’s most sophisticated fully automated temperature-controlled warehouses. These buildings are capable of handling large quantities of product with an exceptional level of accuracy while using fewer resources, particularly electricity. Combining capabilities in automation with Lineage’s applied sciences knowhow will lead to new innovations in warehouse design that should yield even greater efficiencies in the supply chain, creating value and further reducing the environmental footprint for customers.

Lineage’s company’s European operations are headquartered in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, with a network spanning Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Poland, Spain and UK. With Kloosterboer, Lineage will add locations in France, Germany and South Africa to the list, and Kloosterboer facilities on the east coast of Canada will complement Lineage’s existing operations in Montreal and Ontario.

Nielen Schuman acted as financial advisor to the Kloosterboer family and De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek served as its legal counsel. Rabobank and Morgan Stanley acted as Lineage’s financial advisor and Latham & Watkins and NautaDutilh served as its legal counsel.

Lineage Logistics Completes Northern Superhub Cold-Storage Warehouse Expansion in the UK

Novi, MI – Lineage Logistics, LLC (“Lineage” or the “Company”), the world’s largest and most innovative temperature-controlled industrial REIT and logistics solutions provider, today announced the completion of the expansion of its Heywood Northern Superhub, making Manchester home to the UK’s most advanced cold storage facility. The upgraded warehouse will play a key role in UK food distribution and consume 75% less energy than the European average as it features the latest technologies that maximise warehouse space utilization.

The cold storage facility will provide storage for major food manufacturing, service and retail brands, cementing Manchester’s role as a distribution hub for food products in the UK. Following the 12-month expansion, the facility will boast 425,000 sq ft of space and a total of 78,000 pallets across the site on Hareshill Road. This is part of the three-phase expansion of Lineage’s original facility into a Northern Superhub, with prior phases adding 100,000 sq ft of space and 28,000 pallets. The expanded facility became operational during the summer.

“Recent months have seen the importance of the temperature-controlled sector in the economy highlighted and, as the country starts to re-open, we have seen demand rise to higher than pre-COVID levels,” said Tim Moran, Lineage’s Regional Vice President in the UK. “Lineage is continuing to meet customer demands with an ongoing national expansion programme, both nationally and across Europe, and the timely completion of the final phase at Heywood is very welcome.”

The Heywood site links an innovative single-skin cold store to the traditional ‘box-in-box’ design, ensuring the integrity of the minus 30-degree temperature while maximising the internal area and pallet space capacity. State-of-the-art materials and mechanical systems ensure that strict carbon reduction targets are met. With energy management systems in place, the new facility will provide Lineage with 75% operational energy cost savings compared to the average energy consumption of similar facilities in Europe.

A major focus of the upgraded facility is to ensure the integrity of the cold chain. During the construction, balance had to be struck between the conflicting priorities of temperature integrity, dehumidification, reduction in energy use and seamless movement between chambers. To ensure food security, Lineage focused on temperature-controlled loading areas, insulation, fast-closing door seals and the management of construction work alongside the existing operational chamber.

Lineage is also in the process of expanding its Southern Superhub near London. In total, the company will operate six automated warehouses with a total of 330,000 pallet positions, and the expansions will create more than 220 new jobs in the UK.

Lineage is building on land it purchased in the Tauriko industrial estate, with stage one comprising capacity for 10,000 pallets and three blast freezing rooms. Once fully developed, the facility will feature capacity for 30,000 pallets.

The two companies have a proven track record of successful collaboration, co-investing in numerous companies over 8VC’s past three funds and growing their relationship by integrating 8VC portfolio companies across the Lineage platform. Via Lineage Ventures, the logistics firm’s technology investment arm, Lineage and 8VC have catapulted start-up organizations like Project44, Trackonomy, and Baton to success in the transportation and logistics space.

One of 8VC’s differentiating factors is its unique ecosystem of advisors and partners in the logistics and supply chain space. Lineage brings another dimension to this as they are leaders in size, scale, and technology capability with a strong appetite for collaboration. Lineage helps provide deep, real-time insight into the market and represents billions of dollars in purchasing power. The strategic alliance builds on their existing partnership by aligning to a vision to accelerate the pace of innovation in the supply chain. With Lineage Ventures becoming an LP in 8VC’s most recent fund, both companies plan to increase their joint investments in cutting-edge supply chain technology start-ups, as well as support existing companies in their respective portfolios by leveraging their combined network effect and relationships. They also plan to co-develop technology together, including productizing some of Lineage’s most promising intellectual property.

“As Lineage has grown, so has its commitment to use technology and partner with the best technology companies to help eliminate waste in the supply chain and support customer growth, making them one of the most impressive and forward-thinking companies I have come across in my career,” said 8VC Co-founder and Partner, Jake Medwell. “We have so much more to build and are exponentially more powerful working together. I am honored to call them a partner.”

“Lineage’s vision is to be the world’s most dynamic temperature-controlled logistics company, so it is natural for us to unite with 8VC, whose mission is to partner with top founders and entrepreneurs to build lasting technology platforms and create long-term economic and societal value,” said Sudarsan Thattai, Lineage’s Chief Information Officer. “This industry-first partnership aims to redefine enterprise technology in the temperature-controlled logistics sector. We aspire to create new products across automation, digital brokerage, supply chain visibility and planning, as well as industrial hardware/software that drives better customer experience.”

As part of this alliance, Medwell will be joining Lineage as an Advisor, and Thattai will be joining 8VC as an Advisor. These co-advisory roles are intended to deepen their collaboration within this large and complex ecosystem.

“I am thrilled to have Sudarsan join 8VC as an Advisor,” said Medwell. “We’ve had a longstanding friendship and have worked together closely over the years.  I’ve come to know him as one of the most knowledgeable executives in the space and someone who has earned the respect of both the top technology entrepreneurs and existing operators – which is very hard to do.”

“Working with Jake has helped our entire technology team, including the industry’s first and only data science team, advance our technology roadmap and increase our exposure to the most exciting new technologies,” said Thattai. “Aside from having one of the most impressive portfolios, 8VC and Jake have a true understanding of the nuances in the technology space which allows him to see beyond what traditional venture capitalists do. Jake and 8VC have entrepreneurial DNA which makes this partnership so dynamic. They know how to build and rapidly scale companies. They understand how we think and are willing to take risks alongside us.  We are thrilled to expand our partnership and efforts with them,” said Thattai.

As Lineage’s Advisor, Medwell will bring to bear longstanding relationships and partnerships with Schneider National, Daimler, Koch Industries, and others. In addition, he draws on a carefully curated and trusted advisory board which includes some of the most prominent and influential names in the industry such as Chris Sultemeier, former CEO of Walmart Logistics; Alan Gershenhorn, former CCO of UPS; Andrew Clarke, former CFO of C.H. Peters’ appointment is a part of Lineage’s larger structure enhancement strategy for Europe, focused on evolving the organization to better meet the needs of Lineage’s regional customers. Part of that strategy is engaging world class leaders who have the skills and passion to continue to grow Lineage’s European network as well as developing sophisticated functions to serve as the backbone to support that network.

“I’m excited to join the world’s leading cold storage logistics solutions provider, particularly at such a transformative time for the company and its European operations,” said Harld Peters, SVP, Europe at Lineage Logistics. “I look forward to working with this talented team to build Lineage’s brand presence in the region and provide the industry’s best, most comprehensive customer experience.”

Peters’ appointment also comes on the heels of the Company’s recent announcements of its intent to acquire Kloosterboer Group and the cold storage division of Claus Sørensen, two highly respected temperature-controlled logistics providers in Europe.

Lineage Logistics Announces Sponsorship of Kelley James’ Million Meals Tour

Million Meals Tour aims to raise funds to donate over one million meals through private acoustic shows for those facing food insecurity across the United States

Kelley James has performed over 2,000 shows including private shows for Steph Curry, Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, Tiger Woods as well as many Fortune 100 companies

Tour route for Summer 2021 includes shows at 53 locations across the United States

Novi, MI – Lineage Logistics, LLC (“Lineage” or the “Company”), the world’s largest and most innovative temperature-controlled industrial REIT and logistics solutions provider, today announced its sponsorship of American singer and entertainer Kelley James and his Million Meals Tour to raise funds for those facing food insecurity across the United States.

Lineage Logistics is sponsoring James’ second tour as he continues his partnership with Steph and Ayesha Curry, through their Foundation Eat. Learn. Play., and Feeding America, through Meals UP, to donate at least one million meals by performing CDC compliant, private, acoustic shows for hosts, their families, and close friends. The tour route for 2021 includes shows at 53 locations across the United States.

James’ second tour follows his tour in the summer of 2020, where he embarked on his first Million Meals Tour after hearing about the sweeping food insecurity issues across the United States, specifically with children who relied on school programs to provide a majority of their meals during the pandemic. Since the start of the 2020 tour, Kelley has helped generate donations of over 1,500,000 meals to Feeding America and an additional $350,000 to Eat. Learn. Play.

“We are incredibly proud to sponsor Kelley James on his ambitious and inspiring journey to raise funds to donate meals to those in need,” said Greg Lehmkuhl, President and CEO of Lineage. “At Lineage, we live out our purpose every day to help fight food insecurity and couldn’t be more aligned with Kelley’s commitment to the Million Meals Tour.”

“The issue of food insecurity in the United States has grown increasingly important over the past year,” said Kelley James, American singer and entertainer. “After my tour in 2020, I grew increasingly passionate about this issue and knew there was more work to be done. I couldn’t be more excited for the second part of this tour and am honored that Lineage is sponsoring my work to donate one million meals to those in need.”

Lineage previously worked with a variety of partners, including Stephen and Ayesha Curry’s foundation, Eat. Learn. Play., to achieve the goal of its “Share A Meal” campaign which called on global influencers, individuals and food chain leaders to help provide 100 million meals to people affected by COVID-19. The campaign took a multi-faceted, innovative approach to raise awareness and funds which involved donations of time, expertise, services and employment. As a result of financial donations made to Feeding America in support of the campaign, Lineage has been named as a Visionary Partner of Feeding America®, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. Lineage’s partnership with Feeding America was formed in 2019 to reduce process waste and streamline supply chain operations to more efficiently serve communities in need.
